Double Chance Betting Explained

What do 1X, X2 and 12 mean? Learn how double chance betting works, with simple football examples and a comparison with Draw No Bet.

Why Double Chance exists

Standard 1X2 betting gives you three possible results: home win, draw or away win. Double Chance lets one selection cover two of those results. That reduces the number of ways the bet can lose, although the odds are usually lower than a single-result selection.

The market is common in football because draws are frequent enough to matter. If you like one team but think a draw is realistic, Double Chance can express that view without choosing an exact final result.

What 1X, X2 and 12 mean

1X means the home team can win or draw. X2 means the away team can win or draw. 12 means either team can win, so the only losing result is a draw.

These labels come directly from the 1X2 market: 1 is home, X is draw and 2 is away. Once you remember that code, Double Chance is straightforward.

Examples

If you choose 1X and the match ends 2-0, 1-1 or 0-0, the selection wins. It loses only if the away team wins. For X2, the opposite is true: an away win or draw wins, while a home win loses.

A 12 selection wins with any home or away victory. A 1-0, 0-2 or 3-1 score all qualify. A 2-2 draw does not.

Double Chance compared with Draw No Bet

Double Chance and Draw No Bet both reduce exposure to one outcome, but they settle differently. Draw No Bet returns the stake when the match is drawn, while Double Chance includes the draw as a winning result when you choose 1X or X2.

Because the settlement is different, the odds are different as well. Always read the market title rather than assuming the two options are interchangeable.

Where it fits in your football betting

Double Chance can be useful when a favourite is playing away, when two teams are closely matched or when you expect a tight game but still have a preferred side. It is not automatically a safer profit strategy; it simply changes the conditions of the bet.

Before adding it to a multiple or Bet Builder, check how the lower price affects the combined odds and whether the selection is genuinely needed.

Use Double Chance for a clear reason

Do not add Double Chance just because the odds look safer. Ask which of the two covered outcomes you genuinely expect. If you think a team is unlikely to lose, 1X or X2 may express that view clearly.

If you believe a draw is very unlikely, 12 can be the relevant version. The market should match the football idea, not simply the desire to reduce the number of losing outcomes.
